Following the recent announcement of the MacKeeper legal settlement, malware developers are creating routines that redirect people from the settlement site to nefarious Web pages that use javascript hacks to “lock” a browser. When this happens, you will see an alert window that has an OK button, but clicking the button just pops open another alert. Often these alerts are formatted to appear official, and contain details about security problems and require you call some provided number to free your system. Sometimes they may outright demand a ransom to fix your system. This is a common trap used by cybercriminals to convince people to hand over money, and is being used by interested parties to block access to the MacKeeper settlement options. Customers must submit a claim form before November 30, 2015 to become a part of the class action settlement. More than 500,000 people have purchased MacKeeper, paying prices up to $39.95, and buyers will be contacted via email about the settlement. Because of its aggressive marketing tactics, often appearing in intrusive pop-up and pop-under ads, MacKeeper has earned a negative reputation with most Mac users, who believe it’s little more than bloatware. As part of the $2 million settlement earmarked for refunds, ZeoBIT will not need to admit any fault in regards to claims of deceptive advertising and making false claims about the software’s capabilities. MacKeeper is no longer ZeoBIT property, having been sold to Kromtech in April of 2013.

Beijing police have shut down a large iPhone counterfeiting ring within the city that had managed to produce more than 41,000 fake versions of the flagship smartphone, some of which even managed to reach the United States (via Reuters). All told, the ring’s counterfeit production had grown to be worth as much as 120 million yuan (about $19 million). The police have arrested a total of nine suspects thought to be involved directly in the counterfeiting operation, all due to a combined effort to enforce stricter counterfeit and intellectual property laws in China. Of the nine arrested were a 43-year-old man and his 40-year-old wife, whom police believe ran the counterfeit scam under a gadget maintenance shop front before the operation was raided in May. Siri is constantly improving: it became faster and more reliable than ever with iOS 7 and iOS 7.1, gaining new features and a female voice for the UK, and iOS 8 added music identification, “‘Hey Siri!” voice activation and real-time feedback of the words Siri thinks you’re saying. Siri is a massive leap forward over old-fashioned speech recognition. This used to require a strict vocabulary and couldn’t do very much. Worse still, for non-Americans, voice recognition struggled with European, Australian and other accents. Siri doesn’t require a strict vocabulary, and it’ll generally figure out what you’re trying to say. That makes interacting with it seem much more natural. It also works pretty well with a range of accents, and has American, British and Australian settings, as well as French, German, Italian, Spanish and more.
